Sustainable management of resources, strengthen international cooperation and international legal order is some of the goals in the new white paper. The new white paper was presented at the University of Nordland by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jonas Gahr Støre in the end of November.
The Government launched its High North Strategy in 2006, and followed it up with the report New Building Blocks in the North in 2009 – setting out its priorities for the next 10–15 years. The new white paper presents a coherent, long-term policy for dealing with the challenges and opportunities in the High North.
"Our aim is to ensure continued peace and stability in the High North. We will promote sustainable management of the resources in the region, and strengthen international cooperation and the international legal order, which are so crucial for all activities in the north. Over the last six years we have shown that we put our words into action, in areas ranging from the maritime delimitation treaty with Russia, to our efforts to promote knowledge, to the priority we have given to fisheries, energy, new industries and active High North diplomacy,” says the Norwegian Foreign Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre.
In the white paper, the Government emphasizes that Norway’s efforts in the High North are part of a national strategy, involving all ministries and building on broad-based cooperation between the public and private sectors.
